Financial Aid
2009-2010 Academic Year
At Somerset Community College we are committed to making higher education accessible and affordable. SCC provides need- and merit-based aid, including many scholarships. SCC awards more than 80 scholarships each semester.
Many students qualify for some form of financial aid. Financial aid applications are available from high school guidance counselors and at www.fafsa.ed.gov. All other printable Financial Aid forms may be found on the KCTCS website.
How to Apply
Applying for financial aid consists of a single, multi-step process. Students are automatically considered for all forms of financial assistance by simply completing the following steps:
1. Complete federal tax forms as early as possible. You'll need this information to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Be sure to make copies!
2. File your FAFSA as soon after January 1st as possible or as early as possible before the semester you want to start. Filing early gets you in line for any free financial aid grants; these are typically awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted. Your financial information will be forwarded to the schools you list on the FAFSA. Complete the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. We encourage you to complete the FAFSA on the web. The SCC federal school code is 001997.
3. Don't limit your options on financial aid. Indicate that you are interested in student loans and work-study options. Also, financial aid awarded by companies and organizations often requires a special application. Contact them to get the form(s) and other requirements.
4. Keep a copy of every financial aid form you complete. Put it in a file along with your college applications and catalogs.

KCTCS Easy Refund Program
KCTCS now offers you the option of receiving your financial aid and tuition refunds by direct deposit through the KCTCS Easy Refund Program. Of course you still have the option of having your refund sent to your bank account or of receiving a paper check.
The KCTCS Easy Refund Program is in partnership with Higher One, a financial services and payment company focused exclusively on higher education, to distribute financial aid and tuition refunds to students. Higher One will offer a OneAccount checking account to each student. The OneAccount is optional and requires no minimum balance, and is FDIC insured.
What you need to do
Bank cards will be mailed to your current address. If you choose to receive your refund via direct deposit, you'll need to activate the card. Once the card is activated, you'll get your refund the same day it's released by KCTCS.
