Cosmetology Program at Laurel Campus of SCC seeking students to begin Nail Technology class beginning Oct. 20

The Cosmetology Program at the Laurel Campus of Somerset Community College will be offering a new Nail Technology class starting on Monday, October 20. Space in the class is limited to 10 students.

Student entering the Nail Technology Program will learn manicure, pedicure and the latest techniques for nail enhancement.

Student will complete the class on May 8, 2009. The Nail Technology Program requires 600 clock hours of class and laboratory work. Successful graduates will earn 26 college credit-hours and a certificate.

The class will meet Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The instructor will be Regina Kay Swanner. Classes will be located at the Laurel Campus South, located at 235 S. Laurel Rd in London.

We are constantly getting calls from local salons seeking to hire our nail technology graduates,” said Jerry Copenhaver, SCC professor and coordinator of the Cosmetology Program. “There is a big demand.”

Copenhaver said that nail technologists working at local salons often have the flexibility to set their own work schedules. She said that nail technologists can either work for a salon or set up their own business. Copenhaver said that those getting a pedicure and/or manicure can expect to pay between $20 and $50 depending upon what they get done. Some nail technologists work on commission, while others are paid a salary.

According to Copenhaver, students spend about one hour each day learning theory and the rest of the day is spent working in a laboratory setting.

“It’s very much a hands-on experience,” she said.

Those interested in entering the new Nail Technology class should go to Building One on the Laurel Campus North, fill out an application to SCC, and complete their financial aid application. Many students may be eligible for grants or loans to complete the class. The program takes approximately one and one half semesters to complete. Students earn 13 college credit-hours per semester. The tuition cost per semester is $1,547.
