Perkins to speak at SCC Unity Breakfast to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 16
Somerset Community College will again be hosting a Unity Breakfast as part of the SCC Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Friday, Jan. 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the Harold Rogers Student Commons Grill located on the SCC Somerset Campus North. The guest speaker will be retired Somerset Postmaster John L. Perkins.
In addition to a long tenure as the postmaster of Somerset , Perkins is an alumnus of SCC and a former member of the school’s basketball team, the Cougars. He served on the SCC Board of Directors for many years.
In 2004, he was the chairman of SCC’s community-wide effort to recognize former Somerset resident, Todd Duncan, a world-renown star of opera and Broadway, who broke down segregation barriers around the world in the 1930s. Under Perkins’ leadership the effort resulted in Duncan’s induction into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame, the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame, and the Wall of Great Black Kentuckians.
Currently, Perkins is the chair of a group that is seeking to name a street in Somerset in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In addition to Perkins, Jo Murley, an Librarian at the SCC Clinton Center, will read her original poem, “I heard Selma sing.”

“We need people who plan to attend to call and make a reservation to help us get an accurate count of the number of meals we will need,” Wilson said. “But, we would like you to join us.”
