COMMUNITY COLLEGE WEEK MAGAZINE RANKS KCTCS COLLEGES WITHIN TOP 100
Seven colleges of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) have been named in the “Top 100 Associate Degree Producers” by Community College Week magazine.
The KCTCS colleges include: Jefferson Community and Technical College (12th), Elizabethtown Community and Technical College (18th), West Kentucky Community and Technical College (19th), Bluegrass Community and Technical College (27th), Maysville Community and Technical College (49th), Bowling Green Technical College (52nd) and Somerset Community College (53rd).
The rankings are based upon the 2007-08 academic year data reported by the institutions to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), which is collected by the National Center for Education Statistics. Community College Week compared the average annual increase in associate degrees awarded between 1997 and 2008, the most recent years for which data is available.
“There has been a healthy increase this past year in associate degrees (up 3.8 percent), as well as for both one-year certificates (up 4.9 percent) and two-year certificates (up 8.7 percent),” said Victor M. H. Borden, Community College Week contributing writer and associate vice president and professor at Indiana University. “The growth rate this past year for both associate degrees and two-year certificates is greater than the average annual growth rate for the last 10 years.”
Three KCTCS colleges were also listed in the 2009 top 50 colleges awarding associate degrees by discipline. Somerset Community College (44th) in Multi-Interdisciplinary Studies, West Kentucky Community and Technical College (50th) in Multi-Interdisciplinary Studies and Jefferson Community and Technical College (50th) in Communication Technologies/Technicians and Support Services.
