SCC student artwork on display in Holiday Student Exhibit in East End Gallery through December
The Holiday Student Exhibit is now on display in the Somerset Community College East End Gallery. The exhibit includes artwork completed by SCC students in the painting and drawing classes of Darlene Libbey, the SCC assistant professor. The exhibit is free. The East End Gallery, which is located in Stoner Hall on the SCC Somerset Campus North, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The exhibit includes artwork by Elizabeth Ann Bandiera, Meghan B. Benton, Kortnee Boshears, Teresa R. Davidson, Joshua L. Duncan, Chelsey B. Flynn, Lisa Ann Hamley, Janis Lee Hatfield, Daisy M. McCune, Scott Warren Staten, Sara Volpi, Jason Hicks, Patty Brock and David Cazalet.
The Holiday Student Exhibit includes work in a variety of styles and techniques including oils, plaster, and watercolors.
For example, a piece entitled “Cave Buffalo” by Scott Staten uses texture and color to give the impression of a prehistoric painting on the wall of a cave. The viewer can almost feel the cold dankness of a cave as the huge animal seems to hang in the air on the wall.
“The Clash,” by Cortnee Boshears is an example of the variety of styles displayed in this exhibit. The painting is centered on form, but appears to have depth as the greens, yellow and purple draw the viewer to the center of the piece and give the impression of movement. The work is in the style of Jackson Pollock. The horizontal and vertical lines, with drops of paint dripping from them, add to the seeming motion in the work. Viewers may feel as if they are looking at a circular painting created with right angles.
“These students have been working on the relationship of form and content,” said Libbey. “They have been learning to critique their work, not by what is happening in the imagined space beneath the surface, but by thinking of their work as a thing which is essentially flat and made of physical paint.”
